The Invention That Forced the Brain to Rebuild Itself

Writing is roughly 5,000 years old. The oldest known examples come from Mesopotamia, where Sumerian scribes pressed wedge-shaped marks into clay tablets. Before that, for the entire 300,000-year history of Homo sapiens, nobody read anything. Ever.

Five thousand years sounds like a long time. But in evolutionary terms, it's nothing. Evolution needs tens of thousands of generations to build new neural circuitry. We've had maybe 200 generations since the first alphabets appeared. That's not enough time for natural selection to have crafted a reading-specific brain region.

Why You Hear a Voice When You Read

Here's something surprising about reading. Your eyes don't move smoothly across the page.

If you could track someone's eye movements while they read, you'd see something jerky and discontinuous. During a saccade, your vision is effectively suppressed. Your brain turns off visual processing during the jump so you don't perceive a sickening blur every time your eyes move. But it gets weirder. Not every word gets its own fixation. Skilled readers skip roughly 30% of words entirely, particularly short function words like "the," "is," and "of." But if the sentence reads "He spread the warm bread with socks," the word "socks" produces a massive N400. The brain detected a meaning violation, and the size of the N400 reflects the degree of semantic surprise.
